FEATURES
Substrate based on acidic and neutral blond peat that gives softness and an ideal pH for growing the most common carnivorous plants (Dionaea, Sarracenia, Drosera, etc…). The substrate is enriched with respiration flakes (perlite) that promote a balanced water supply to the plants’ root system, preventing water stagnation harmful to these plants, which in fact prefer moist but well-drained soils.
METHODS OF USE
Repotting: use containers made of plastic, earthenware pots or other material, preferring those pots with a hole in the bottom for water drainage to prevent the root system from rotting. Spread expanded clay on the bottom of the pot for a thickness equal to 1/5-1/6 of the height of the pot itself in order to ensure the maintenance of a suitable moisture content and cover with the substrate by pressing well in the center and on the sides. Place the plant, taking care to remove the old soil from the surface part of the root ball in order to prevent any rot, and add more substrate, always pressing down properly. Water carefully and slowly until water begins to drain from the drainage hole. Before repeating watering, make sure the substrate begins to dry on the surface and do not overwater. Every 2 to 3 weeks you should weed the surface of the substrate with a rake so that it is dislodged and aerated.
As a general rule, repot Dionea every year in spring.
WARNINGS: especially when using plastic containers, traditional substrates shrink significantly as they dry out and peel away from the walls, making watering unnecessary. This is because water seeps through the gap created and runs off without wetting the soil. With the presence of a balanced peat mixture these drawbacks are reduced by facilitating rapid rewetting of the substrate.
